EAG 2014 Firest Impressions: Aliens

First Impressions: Aliens

Ah another Alien game, another rail shooter. Damn, I've already played Transformers, can’t be any worse than that, and to be fair it wasn't. But it was that far off, if it wasn't for Transformers however I’d be damn annoyed about this game.

Aliens are basically what it says it is, it’s a game about Aliens in a rail shooter perspective. And really it’s another rail shooter but it does have some interesting aspects about the game. First of all this game’s gun is similar to Ghost Squad but it has the reload button under the gun where the ammo Cartage would go. This is not a new take on it, but definitely interesting. Also the game has a button on the side used for grenades to take out a large amount of enemies at once, nothing new but different from the status quo.

The game uses a life bar system (Urgh!) where different attacks take different amounts of health. So it’s same old stuff here in that sense, and in this game you will be taking damage a lot. This game has a heavy emphasis of a large amount of mobs moving fast with quite a bit of health. There is no indication of weak points or nothing indicating in the game you is doing critical damage to the enemy. Overall it makes the game really bland and sluggish because of the constant cut scenes and there is a lot of waiting around for the camera to span and cut scenes to finish. I spent more time waiting to shoot than shooting itself.

The difficulty mostly came from the sheer amount of mobs coming at you with nothing much actually needing precision. More often than not an enemy will be waiting to attack when the camera spans or pop up in the corner to attack while fighting other mobs. It’s all a memory game at that point. There is an emphasis on strategic reloading to not be caught off rhythm of wave after wave of enemies, with nothing really much past that.

The game also does a lot of transitions of weapons by giving you a different weapon for a different section of a level. It’s ok to have variety but it seems that it’s more of an illusion since it’s just doing the same thing with a new weapon while not having a choice on what one to use. When it comes to weapon transitioning on an on the rails game, Time Crisis is still king of that and the way they did it makes it so each gun has a use (balancing aside of course) and can be interchanged when needed be. To me there isn’t much more to this game than mediocre, I could do with another rail shooter even in the arcade tides me, but until then GalGun will have to do.
