A Look Around London Games Society

Last Friday afternoon I went down to High Cross United Reformed Church in Tottenham, to a gathering of NthGen Interactive's fighting, portable and card game-focused London Games Society. London Games Society meets up once a month, normally on a Saturday, but this month was a bit different thanks to the epic fighting game fest Revolution 2014 taking place over the following weekend.

Apart from the changed timing, though, everything about the meet-up was just the same as ever. You could go head to head on fighting games like Arcana Heart; sit down to card games like Weiss Schwarz (and if you've never played, you can come along and learn!); and play alongside fellow portable gaming fans with games like Monster Hunter and Freedom Wars. The entry fee is £5, and you can stay as long as you like, from 2pm until 8pm.

To see the action up close, watch the short video I made and hear NGI's Rayokarna talk about what's going on with London Games Society:

Recording on Arcade Machines 1: DJ Max Technika

Stream Arcade Machines Article 1: DJ Max Technika

This article will be a series covering ways of successfully getting footage from an arcade machine. The first machine we are going to look at is the DJ Max Technika machine. While this machine is quite old and the franchise pretty much killed by Neowiz, it is still one of the most difficult machines to capture on if you don’t know what you are doing. The first thing to point out is that this machine has several layers of encryption. It has them for both visual and audio so you have to be careful where you decide to split cables.

Nth Gen Interactive Update 17/04

Rayokarna here,

Nth Gen Interactive has been quite quiet as of late as myself has been busy with University crunch time and also a few of the other members of the group have their own personal responsibilities to attend too so there hasn't been much content as of late. We apologize for the silence but if there has anything specific you need to contact us about, contact me directly on Twitter (@Rayokarna) and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. This update is going to cover a couple near future to far future stuff so if you are interested in anything NGI related then you should read on.

Valentine's Special: Xynnia and Rayokarna Play Galgun ぎゃる☆がん

Xynnia: Hey guys, Xynnia and Rayokarna here with a special joint blog post!
Rayokarna: Yo yo.
Xynnia: Obviously we're putting it up a bit late, but officially this is a Valentine's Day special. On Valentine's Day we did what all normal couples do and sat down to play a game about girls having orgasms. That's right - none other than the Japanese rail shooter Galgun.

Rayo has been going on about this game for some time now, but I've never quite got my head around what it's all about. Well, today you can follow along with my confused attempts to make sense of the game as Rayokarna plays through it. The fact that it we're playing it in Japanese as there's no localised English version bodes especially well for my ability to understand what is going on. Are you ready?

Quick Import Reviews: Gundam Breaker

Gundam Breaker Review:

Developer: Namco Bandai

Publisher: Namco Bandai Games

Release: 27th June 2013 (JP/PS3) 31st October (JP/Vita)

Probably one of the most interesting Japanese releases in 2013 was Gundam Breaker. A half Gundam, half hunting game which brought different aspects from Monster Hunter, Ragnarok Odyssey and Soul Sacrifice wrapped up into one with a hint of Dynasty Warriors Gundam in the mix too. This is definitely an interesting take on the Gundam Franchise that quite a few people haven looking forward to which involve the ability to mix and match their Gundam preferences is something that has been talked about and this is the first game to make it happen.

EAG 2014 Interview: Lauren Harrison from Namco Bandai on Animal Kaiser

In the middle of a busy day at EAG, Commander Nippon and I ran into something we haven’t seen since we were in Japan: a card terminal game, very common in Japan but almost non-existent in the west. Games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Idolmaster, Love Plus and Dragon Ball Z have all had arcade games based around their collectible cards, but none of those saw a western release. Needless to say we were quite surprised to see the machine; not only that, but it appeared to be in mid-translation from Japanese to English. Luckily for us, Lauren Harrison from Namco Bandai was on the scene to give us more information about the game.

Xynnia Reviews Video Games Amino: A Gaming Community With a Difference

Video Games Amino is a portable gaming community. And by that I don’t actually mean a community for players of portable games (like, say, DS London or our very own Portable Gaming Centre) – I mean a gaming community that’s literally portable. If you have a portable iOS device like an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, I recommend taking a look at the Amino apps. I’ll be focusing primarily on the Video Games Amino in this review, but there is an Amino app for almost every hobby and each one is free to download and use.

Quick Review: House of the Dead 4

House of the Dead 4 PS3 Quick Review

To be honest, House of the Dead 4 is a pretty simple game. At its heart it’s a rail shooter, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. This game is a direct port of the 2005 House of the Dead 4 which broke into arcades as one of the first high-definition arcade games of the era.

EAG 2014 Firest Impressions: Aliens

First Impressions: Aliens

Ah another Alien game, another rail shooter. Damn, I've already played Transformers, can’t be any worse than that, and to be fair it wasn't. But it was that far off, if it wasn't for Transformers however I’d be damn annoyed about this game.

Portable Gaming Centre 2014: February 22nd

Portable Gaming Centre will be making a comeback for 2014 with it's first one at the new venue of Playnation Games, Croydon. The event will feature both Playstation Vita and 3DS games as usual. Perfect time after the holidays from picking up new games and consoles and you need people to play with.

EAG 2014: First Impressions: Batman

First Impressions: Batman

I was generally surprised to see this sitting under the Namco Bandai booth actually. A Batman game that is based around the driving, what is this madness!? Anyway it’s a part of EAG so it’s going to be one of few times I’ll get to practice on it for free.

Xynnia Reviews 'Depression Quest'

Developer: Zoe Quinn
Release: 14th February 2013 (PC, online)

Trigger Warning: This review contains some discussion of depression in the context of a game.

The free indie PC game Depression Quest came onto my radar about a month and a half ago, after I saw a Twitter shout-out to support the game on Steam Greenlight. The game was first released on Valentine's Day of last year, but the journey to greenlight it on Steam was long and filled with sexist harassment directed against developer Zoe Quinn. After being taken down once and resubmitted, the game was finally greenlit just earlier this month.

Astral Heat Overdrive: Arcana Heart 3 Results

Arcana Heart 3 is the ultimate mix of niche and action, broken hit boxes, ridiculous rush down, superfast game play and more. Astral Heat brought a lot of the London veterans like Frost, Pawndriver and LordSpectreX. Out of towners like AngelDarkSong also entered to make quite an action packed tournament.

Videos and results inside the jump.

EAG 2014: Transformers First Impressions

First Impressions: Transformers

Well as a major fan of rail shooters, I look at any arcade game of interest which comes within that genre and this game was just up my street. However when I walked up to the machine I had a bit of a Rambo feel about this game which is not good, anyway I tried I anyway and here is what I got.

Astral Heat Overdrive: Guilty Gear +R Results and videos

Sound Race Rankings: London's DJ Max Technika 3 Release Event

We are proud to announce the one of many events we have lined up, and it's an old favourite of ours and it's DJ Max Technika 3. Even with the shut down of the server we are still glad that Toby who is working at Las Vegas Soho has been able to get us the upgrade from Technika 2 so we can at least experience the game. Especially that it gives us a reason to host this: Sound Race Rankings!
